PRIMARK | GENSLER NY
Architect & Client: Gensler New York
Role: Facade Consultant* (Studio NYL)
Location: King of Prussia, Pennsylvania
Completed: 2016
Project description: Tasked with repositioning an old Sears space at one of the largest malls on the east coast, Gensler designed a modern renovation. Facade consulting on the project included the large formed 3D paneling, the gradient rainscreen paneling, and the specialty glazing at the primary entrance.
Taking stock of existing buildings is becoming increasingly more common. It seems that developers are finding that the renovation of existing structures is not only more sustainable minded but more fiscally responsible than building new.
With the uptick in re-cladding, restoration, and renovation of current structures it is critical to understand not only the structural aspects of such an endeavor but also the existing envelope and how to address its remediation. It is not a simple and straightforward exercise of over-cladding the existing facade due to various factors such as: a new vision for remodel or renovation, the design and craftsmanship of the existing enclosure, Outdated code requirements and ultimate performance of the existing enclosure.
Though there are many challenges, the opportunities of creating a modern and vibrant place are too great not to try.
